Do you want to know what holds power? What can help you achieve your dreams and reach your goals?
It costs nothing, it’s available to you now. You have in fact had it all along.
It’s consistency.
How simple, how ordinary…how true.
This year I have come to believe the secret to achieving anything I dream of lies in consistency. Have you ever heard the phrase ‘showing up is half the battle’? I would say it’s way more than half. Showing up is the battle.
If there is something you want to achieve, I encourage you to think about how you can work on it consistently. This will be hard. Some days it won’t be fun. In fact, it may not be fun most of the time, even if it’s something you enjoy.
At the start of the pandemic one of my close friends started a 90-day exercise program. Feeling adrift and having time on my hands, I asked if I could join her. We set out on our 90-day journey and I would show up day after day because I knew she was doing it too.
It wasn’t always enjoyable. The exercise routines would rotate each week and at the start of new week they were often so challenging I would fall over. However, day by day I would improve and by day six I would be much better.
The days turned into months and along the way, I started realizing this exercise experiment was about far more than a fitness challenge.
After showing up every day for months, I was healthier than I had ever been in my life. Was it the exercise? Yes, it certainly had to do with stretching and focusing on moving. However, the power of transformation was in the consistency.
That was an epiphany for me. I realized there were other things I dream of accomplishing, goals I have for my voiceover and acting career. If I could show up every day for 60 minutes to work on what I dream of, I knew I could make an equal amount of progress.
I find it’s easiest for me if I do my consistency ritual in the morning, before distractions crowd into my schedule. I don’t make it every day, but more often than not I do.
